The Mask of Zorro

Set against nineteenth-century California, The Mask of Zorro links two generations through loss, vengeance and resistance to the abuse of power. Don Diego de la Vega, the celebrated masked defender known as Zorro, sees his life destroyed after opposing Rafael Montero: he is imprisoned, his wife is killed and his daughter Elena is taken from him and raised away from her true father. Nearly twenty years later, Diego escapes and encounters Alejandro Murrieta, a reckless young man driven by grief and anger following the death of his brother Joaquín. Rather than using Alejandro merely as an instrument of revenge, Diego begins to shape him into a successor, teaching swordsmanship, discipline, strategy and the social bearing required to move between the worlds occupied by Zorro. Alejandro's transformation unfolds as Montero returns, Diego is brought once more into Elena's orbit and a scheme rooted in exploitation, violence and ambition comes to light. Directed by Martin Campbell, the film revives the classical swashbuckling tradition through swordplay, pursuit, romance, humour and large-scale adventure while giving the story a generational structure. Zorro is presented not simply as a disguise belonging to one man, but as a legacy that can be inherited when courage is joined by responsibility and resistance becomes a form of justice.
