With the end of World War II and the redesign of Europe at the Yalta Conference, communism established itself in Hungary. The harshness of the regime, however, created a wave of discontent that materialized in an insurrection, which began on October 23, 1956, in Budapest. The USSR was no longer under the command of Stalin, who died in 1953. But Stalinism was still sufficiently embedded in the Soviet repressive apparatus to massacre the civil movement. The seed of freedom, however, had been planted. It would not be long before Czechoslovakia and Poland also challenged Moscow. In a clear sign that, sooner or later, the Iron Curtain would open.
