In early-1970s Rome, middle-aged bricklayer and committed Communist Oreste Nardi encounters Adelaide Ciafrocchi, a young flower seller who suddenly offers him an escape from an unhappy domestic existence. Their attraction is immediate and passionately reciprocated, drawing Oreste away from his established life and into an emotionally charged romance. The fragile happiness of the couple changes when Oreste befriends Nello Serafini, a younger Tuscan pizza maker whose arrival introduces a second attraction into Adelaide's life and turns an apparently conventional love affair into an unstable triangle.
Unable to settle her feelings for either man, Adelaide becomes the centre of a relationship governed increasingly by desire, rivalry, wounded pride and jealousy. Political demonstrations, working-class neighbourhoods, construction sites, pizzerias and the less picturesque margins of Rome surround the lovers, placing their private turmoil inside a distinctly social landscape. Oreste's jealousy gradually ceases to be merely comic or romantic; it becomes an obsessive force that strips away friendship, political conviction, economic security and eventually his hold upon ordinary reality.
Ettore Scola frames much of the story as a retrospective reconstruction of events, allowing Oreste, Adelaide and Nello to revisit their conflicting experiences before an implied judicial audience. Anchored by Marcello Mastroianni, Monica Vitti and Giancarlo Giannini, Jealousy, Italian Style brings the traditions of commedia all'italiana into contact with melodrama, tragic romance and social satire. Its broad comedy and grotesque exaggeration coexist with an increasingly bitter examination of love, class, emotional possession and the destructive consequences of attempting to make desire conform to social expectations.
