Metamorphosis (2012), directed by Chris Swanton, is a haunting, atmospheric adaptation of Franz Kafka’s seminal 1915 novella Die Verwandlung. The film follows Gregor Samsa, a humble traveling salesman who awakens one morning in his modest London home to an incomprehensible horror: he has become a grotesque, enormous insect‑like creature. What begins as a surreal physical transformation quickly becomes a devastating psychological and emotional odyssey.
Confined to his bedroom, Gregor is forced to confront the collapse of his identity, dignity, and purpose. His physical change mirrors the invisible fractures within his family: his sister, once lively and dependent, becomes resentful and detached; his father, embittered by lost income, harbors a growing hostility; his mother, once tender, is rendered helpless and terrified. Gregor’s desperate yearning for understanding and love is met not with compassion, but with fear, neglect, and ultimately violence.
As Gregor’s health declines, the family’s tolerance fractures into cruelty. A cruel assault with apples from his father wounds him deeply. Imprisoned and starving, Gregor’s slow decline is a tragic reflection on alienation and the human need for connection. In his final moments, it becomes painfully clear that his suffering has become an unwanted burden. His passing is met with an eerie sense of relief by his family, who then dare to dream of a renewed life in the absence of the brother they could never truly know.
