After thirty years trapped in a bitter and loveless marriage, Paul Braconnier has reached the point where coexistence with his wife, Blandine, seems impossible. While she secretly prepares to poison him, Paul becomes fascinated by a celebrated defense lawyer who boasts on the radio about never losing a murder case. Pretending that he has already killed his wife, Paul visits the lawyer to learn how the perfect crime could be committed without leading to conviction. Unwittingly, the attorney provides the very strategy that will later be used against the justice system itself. Written and directed by Sacha Guitry, La Poison (Poison) transforms a seemingly simple murder plot into an exceptionally sharp satire of law, marriage, public morality, sensationalist media, and the contradictions of post-war French society.
