Twin sisters Marisol and Mariluz have spent years growing up in very different worlds. Marisol lives in Madrid with their mother, Isabel, while Mariluz has remained in Rio de Janeiro with their uncle. As letters appear to go unanswered and the distance between both sides of the family becomes increasingly painful, Isabel struggles to find the money required to reach Brazil. Eventually, she sells the household furniture so that she and Marisol can make the journey and reunite the family.
Their arrival in Rio does not produce the uncomplicated reunion they imagined. Mariluz has developed habits and attitudes very different from her sister’s, while the people surrounding the household conceal interests that gradually transform the family comedy into a story of deception and danger. As suspicions grow, the remarkable resemblance between the twins becomes more than a visual curiosity: it becomes one of the dramatic mechanisms through which identities can be confused and plans disrupted.
Directed by Fernando Palacios and built around Marisol’s dual performance, Marisol rumbo a Río combines comedy, adventure and musical sequences within the accessible language of early-1960s Spanish popular cinema. The movement from Madrid to Rio de Janeiro gives the story an international setting while preserving its central concerns with family, identity and reunion, allowing music and humour to coexist with an increasingly pronounced strand of suspense.
