In Greece, wealthy industrialist Jonas Bracken sees the security surrounding his family collapse when his wife Ellen and their children are abducted by terrorists. Police efforts fail to bring the crisis to a conclusion, while the kidnappers' demands and the difficulty of locating the hostages make a conventional rescue increasingly unlikely. Ellen's former husband, Jim McCabe, enters the situation determined to pursue an alternative course, turning a personal connection with the victims into the driving force behind an independent rescue operation.
A photograph of the captives provides the clue that leads McCabe towards an isolated monastery among the dramatic rock formations of Greece. Its elevated and heavily protected position makes an approach from the ground exceptionally dangerous. McCabe therefore devises an audacious strategy and recruits skilled hang-glider pilots, transforming recreational flight into a means of covert infiltration. The landscape becomes part of the suspense as the rescuers must cross open air and precipitous terrain before confronting the kidnappers.
Directed by Douglas Hickox, Sky Riders (1976) places James Coburn at the centre of an action-adventure built around physical risk, aerial movement and spectacular Greek locations. Susannah York, Robert Culp and Charles Aznavour complete the principal cast. Rather than relying solely on conventional gunplay, the film derives much of its distinctive character from its hang-gliding sequences and the unusual architecture of its rescue scenario, making it an intriguing example of mid-1970s action cinema.
