Arthur and Eve have spent decades maintaining the appearance of a stable, cultivated family life with their three adult daughters, Renata, Joey and Flyn. That carefully arranged world begins to fracture when Arthur announces that he wants a separation. For Eve, an interior decorator whose emotional life is closely bound to order, restraint and perfection, the decision threatens not merely her marriage but the entire structure through which she has attempted to organise both her surroundings and her family.
Renata is an accomplished poet troubled by creative uncertainty and tensions within her marriage; Joey remains unable to settle upon a vocation and carries a longstanding sense that she has never earned her mother's admiration; Flyn, an actress, lives at a greater distance from the family's daily crises. Their father's departure forces the sisters into renewed contact with Eve's psychological instability while exposing old rivalries, disappointments, guilt and failures of communication within the family.
The arrival of Arthur's new partner, Pearl, introduces a presence almost opposite to Eve's controlled sensibility. Pearl's warmth and spontaneity disrupt the family's carefully regulated emotional environment and sharpen the contrast between appearance and experience, aesthetic perfection and human vitality. Dispensing with the comedy associated with his earlier work, Woody Allen shapes Interiors as an austere psychological family drama concerned with marriage, motherhood, artistic ambition, emotional dependency and the difficulty of achieving genuine intimacy.
