Fausto Di Salvio, a prosperous Roman publisher increasingly weary of business, family expectations and the conventions of his comfortable existence, travels to Africa in search of his missing brother-in-law Oreste Sabatini. He is accompanied by his accountant Ubaldo Palmarini, a cautious and reluctant travelling companion whose temperament could hardly be further from Fausto's. Their investigation develops through a succession of uncertain clues, contradictory testimonies and traces of the many identities Sabatini appears to have adopted since leaving Europe.
As the two men move through Angola, the search becomes an episodic journey populated by missionaries, settlers, mercenaries, adventurers and local communities. Ettore Scola uses the changing landscape and the mismatched personalities of Alberto Sordi and Bernard Blier to shape an expansive adventure comedy in which European assumptions are repeatedly overturned. The increasingly improbable situations remain comic, yet the humour carries an undercurrent of social observation concerning class, colonial attitudes, modern urban life and the impulse to escape from it.
By the time Fausto approaches the truth about Oreste, the central question has changed. Finding the missing man also means understanding why he chose to disappear and whether returning to his former life is desirable at all. What begins as a comic expedition gradually opens into a more ambiguous reflection on freedom, belonging and dissatisfaction, giving Scola's African odyssey a dimension that reaches beyond the mechanics of the search itself.
